PORT HURON, MI – A wrong turn at an international border is likely to cost an Eaton County woman.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officers took a 43-year-old female into custody in Port Huron on May 21. They accused her of driving a stolen vehicle and being in possession of both marijuana and substantial amount of gold.
“In this case, CBP officers took the extra steps to identify an individual in possession of a stolen vehicle and a large amount of gold,” said Port Director Michael Fox.
The driver made a wrong turn and accidentally ended up on the Blue Water Bridge. After turning around on the bridge, the driver tried to obtain entry back into the United States.
Customs officers conducted a primary inspection, which led to the discovery that the vehicle was stolen. Officers took the driver into custody without incident and conducted a further search of the vehicle.
The found gold bars weighing over five pounds inside the vehicle, plus 30 grams of marijuana. According to officials, the gold bars were worth over $130,000.
Customs turned over custody of the female driver, stolen vehicle, gold and marijuana to the Michigan State Police so that an investigation may continue on the case.
