Utah traffic stop results in discovery of marijuana, THC, hashish, vape pens

https://kutv.com/news/local/marijuana-10-11-2018

A man was arrested for allegedly driving through Utah with thousands of cartridges of THC, cigars with hashish and approximately 200 pounds of marijuana, among with other items.

The 50-year-old James Martin Burns, of Providence, Rhode Island, was heading through Utah when he was pulled over by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 80. He was originally pulled over for an equipment violation in Summit County, according to court documents. During the subsequent search of his vehicle, the officer became suspicious of possible drugs.

So far Burns is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. That charge carries a possible 20 years in prison and a fine of $1 million.

During the stop, Burns reportedly told the trooper the van was borrowed and he was helping a friend move his belonging to Rhode Island. While waiting for a records check, the trooper deployed a K9 officer to sniff the vehicle and returned a positive identification from the exterior of the van. Inside he discovered “numerous” cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic and four large metal toolboxes with padlocks.

The officer obtained a warrant to search the vehicle.

Documents state that one of the cardboard boxes contained e-cigarette cartridges with labels indicating 80 to 85 percent THC oil. The van was then towed to a UHP office for a more complete search where State Bureau of Investigation found:

  • 7,000 vape pen cartridges containing suspected THC oil
  • Approximately 800 cigars containing hashish
  • Approximately 1,400 vape pens containing suspected TCH
  • Approximately 400 jars containing suspected marijuana concentrates
  • Approximately 100 pre-rolled cigarettes containing suspected marijuana
  • 204 packages, each about one pound, with green material that field tested positive for marijuana

It was anticipated Burns would appear before Judge Paul M. Warner Thursday.
