Python, drugs, weapons seized, man charged at Leeton

A man has been charged after drugs and weapons were seized from a property near Griffith.

About 3pm yesterday (Thursday 21 May 2020), officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District were patrolling Wirilda Street, Leeton, when they stopped to speak with a 34-year-old man.

It’s alleged the man was in possession of a knife which was seized. He was released pending inquiries.

Following further inquiries, police conducted a Firearms Prohibition Order (FPO) and a Weapons Prohibition Order (FPO) at a home in Leeton.

During the search, police allegedly located and seized two knives, a samurai sword, a coffee table leg fashioned into a weapon, shotgun shells, cannabis and methylamphetamine.

A 1.8m diamond python was found under a lounge. The snake was safely removed and is currently being cared for by an animal rescue organisation.

The 34-year-old man was located hiding in a cupboard at the home.

He was arrested and taken to Leeton Police Station, where he was charged with use prohibited weapon contrary to prohibition order (x2), acquire ammunition subject to prohibition order, possess prohibited drug (x2) and resist officer in the execution of duty.

The man was refused bail and appeared at Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Friday 22 May 2020). His next court appearance is scheduled for Griffith Local Court on Tuesday 2 June 2020.
