946 kg of cannabis seized in southeastern Morocco

Moroccan police said in a statement on Saturday that they have seized some 946 kg of cannabis in the southeastern city of Errachidia.

Four people aged between 25 and 38, with suspected links to a criminal drug trafficking network were arrested and two vehicles were also seized.

The operation took place early Saturday at a checkpoint on the road linking Errachidia to Boudnib.

The arrestees were remanded in custody to complete the probe, while investigations are underway to arrest all the suspects involved in this drug trafficking ring.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world’s largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Moroccan security agencies seized a total of 179,657 kg of cannabis in 2019, the Moroccan police revealed in its annual report on Dec. 25.
